One of the beautiful things about Kenya being on the equator is that it has a higher capacity for wind and solar farms than most other places on the planet. Recently a group of men from our church visited the Kipeto Energy wind farm where one of our own brethren is a co-founder. The right energy mix and electric mobility go hand in hand in creating a sustainable energy future.
Kipeto Energy is a 100MW onshore wind farm in Kajiado County of Kenya has some 60 turbines each with 1.7 MW capacity. It is the second largest wind farm in the country supplying power to an estimated 250,000 households. The wind farm covers an area of approximately 3300 hectares and is connected to the Kenyan national grid at Isinya substation via a 17km 220kV transmission line. Plans are underway for a 100 MW phase two and 50 MW phase three project at the same site.
Ugali and mbuzi choma prepared Maasai style in the bush was the sumptuous lunch menu before the men had discussions on the targets for the next few months and years. It is the famed Nigerian author & poet Chinua Achebe that said ““A man who calls his kinsmen to a feast does not do so to save them from starving. They all have food in their own homes. When we gather together in the moonlit village ground it is not because of the moon. Every man can see it in his own compound. We come together because it is good for kinsmen to do so.”
