Today Kenya is celebrating Jamhuri Day, to mark the day it became a sovereign republic. The celebration this year is themed Jobs, Labour Migration, Entrepreneurship & Entertainment, to mark the gains in job creation and economic empowerment. However, are we really sovereign and independent? On paper yes, but on the ground, certainly not.

Not when the debt to GDP ratio has risen to 70%, youth unemployment is at 67%, we are a net importer of even basic commodities, and oil is the single biggest import cost & foreign exchange depleter at $ 600 million monthly. Not when Parliament is passing laws to control subsistence agriculture, water use, industrial chemicals, non-GMO foods, animal husbandry and a myriad of other initiatives against local farmers while aiding multinationals.

Sadly many African countries are in similar scenarios where the borrower is a slave to the lender. Right now our lenders mostly the G20 countries and the economic hitmen at the Bretton Woods institutions, are directing many economic & social policies in African countries including the LGBTQ agenda.

Electric mobility, sustainable transport, renewable energy & green jobs are related initiatives to improve the economic situation for our beloved country and the continent by extension. These initiatives also address the problems of climate change and artificial intelligence, some of the definiting challenges of our generation. Globally this has been the hottest year ever since weather records began.

As Barrack Obama once said, we are the last generation that has a chance to change the situation.
